SUHARTO’S HEALTH: INDONESIA

Suharto’s health worsens with each passing day

And since he was a Cold War warrior of the US, his misdemeanors were overlooked by the West.

With the demise of Soviet Union, Suharto’s political fortunes also took a nosedive. The West was no longer ready to support a dictator in the era of ascendancy of democratic norms across the world. Although his supporters always credit him for uniting the Indonesian archipelago, which has more than 13,000 islands, where roughly 200 different languages are spoken. But his overindulgence in achieving his objectives through mass murders & genocides far overshadowed his good deeds.

Suharto was perhaps the first political victim of financial crisis, which had hit the ASEAN region in 1997. The protests against his policies forced Suharto to relinquish the throne in 1998.
