The stork’s at our beck and call!

While every woman dreams of becoming a mother, getting pregnant requires reflection…

It is a generation where numerous give more importance to their careers than to social interactions and many spend more time with their computers than their respective better halves. Confident that technology, like always, will save the day and allow one to procreate whenever one wills, people are allowing their biological clocks to tick away. Buoyed by successful cases like that of Jennifer Lopez, 38, who recently gave birth to twins, and our queen of masala movies Farah Khan, 43, whose triplets are at the moment harvesting gifts from the film community, late pregnancies are becoming the norm, rather than an exception.

Says Dr. Swati, Gynecologist and IVF-fertility specialist, “While 20-40 is an absolutely safe age group to give birth to a child, 40-50 needs to be closely monitored at all points of time and beyond 50 is not recommended.” The pregnancy of the 42-year-old film director Farah Khan had made many skeptical but her delivery of three healthy babies has intrigued all those who wish to postpone parenthood and finish their education or invest in their career; or for that matter because of the belated arrival of their soul mate.

“After 35, the chances of natural conception are really low due to the decline in the number of naturally produced eggs in a woman’s body. It is then that artificial techniques such as IVF are used to produce more number of eggs in the ovary,” clarifies Dr. Swati.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is an assisted reproductive technique in which egg cells are fertilised by sperm outside the woman’s womb. The ovulatory process is hormonally controlled by helping a woman produce more ova (eggs) and then removing them from her ovaries and allowing sperm to fertilise them in a fluid medium. The IVF specialist further elaborates, “The best quality embryo (tested in the lab) is then placed in the woman’s uterus and it is the age and health of the woman that decides whether the embryo will survive or not.” Keeping the age factor in mind, “more than one embryo (two to three)” is placed in a woman’s body so that “at least one” of them survives.

TATA CHEMICALS: ACQUISITION

GCIP acquisition gives sustainability but also substantially increases the risk profile for TCL

Moreover, TCL will undoubtedly face integration challenges with the unlisted US firm. Complicating matters further is the size and operating profile of GCIP (Moody). The transaction and the resulting financial & operating profile is still not amply clear. “Exchange rate is another challenge that stands in front of TCL”, Nagraj adds.

Well, the plan looks picturesque perfect. However, the road for TCL as well as the Tata group isn’t an expressway. Tata Group of late has raised lot of debts in financing its elephantine acquisitions and servicing, which might be a problem. There’s a maddening race at Tata Group companies to leverage in-organic growth. Tata Steel acquired Corus for $13.7 billion and another group company Tata Motors is also in talks with Ford to acquire Jaguar & Land Rover for $2 billion apart from many multi–million dollar acquisitions done by TCS, Tata Tea & other group companies in the recent past. And as most of these acquisitions have significantly increased its exposure to the American & European economies, sluggishness in there two markets could place Tata’s plans in jeopardy for quite some time to come.

MNCS: INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS

MNCs are hailed as national treasures but their devil-may-care attitude results in tragedies, making them global shame

What can be more traumatic and horrifying industrial accident than the phosgene, the lethal gas leak at Thailand petrochemical company Thai Polycarbonate Co. which has killed one and injured over hundreds. Shockingly, inspite of innumerable calls from many environmental activists of the locality to stop gas leakage which many had already identified, the accident could have been prevented; the company was reluctant to improve its pipelines.

And the fiery explosion with unstoppable fire and smoke at one of the largest oil refineries of British Petroleum in Texas City in 2005 is another example of shameless irresponsibility of global MNCs. Well, it was not the first such accident; BP has a record of fatal accidents, for last few decades. Moreover, it is the eighth largest polluter in the US, releasing over 5.1 million tonnes of pollutants with many harmful toxic gases like carcinogens causing serious health ill-effects to 30,000 people living within three mile radius. But while FBI investigation and imposition of new laws and fines continues, BP’s capability gradually sharpens to refuse or strive to escape from it. Nigeria witnessed the perfect misery out of corporate social irresponsibility. Companies like Shell, Exxonmobil & Chevron are reaping off nation’s oil industry but continue showing through negligence in improving environment, human life and the locality which have been affected by gas leakage and flares in their plants or refineries.

For MNCs, the planet has been served to be their playing-field but they have to follow rules of the game. Their profits cannot plunder people. How long will international community put up with their myopic vision and operations? The deemed-be-national-treasures actually prove to be global shame in neglecting their duties.

SUHARTO’S HEALTH: INDONESIA

Suharto’s health worsens with each passing day

And since he was a Cold War warrior of the US, his misdemeanors were overlooked by the West.

With the demise of Soviet Union, Suharto’s political fortunes also took a nosedive. The West was no longer ready to support a dictator in the era of ascendancy of democratic norms across the world. Although his supporters always credit him for uniting the Indonesian archipelago, which has more than 13,000 islands, where roughly 200 different languages are spoken. But his overindulgence in achieving his objectives through mass murders & genocides far overshadowed his good deeds.

Suharto was perhaps the first political victim of financial crisis, which had hit the ASEAN region in 1997. The protests against his policies forced Suharto to relinquish the throne in 1998.

It was Moditva, not just development

Despite all odds, Narendra Modi won the state elections in Gujarat. What was projected as a neck-and-neck fight turned out to be a kind of a sweep for the incumbent Chief Minister. According to some experts, Modi won on the development plank. Others, who hate him, contend he fought on the Hindutva issue. There is the third set of experts, who claim Modi evolved his own brand of ‘Moditva’, which won him the elections. So, what was it really that helped him?

Well, as far as development is concerned, Gujarat has always been a prosperous state. The reason behind this is the remarkable success of the co-operative movement in the state. The successful example of Anand Co-operative (famous for the Amul brand) is there for everyone to see. Gujarat has also boasted of several economic sobriquets before Modi became a full-time politician. In the old days, it has been called the Manchester of India, Diamond Capital, Milk Capital, and Ice Cream Capital. “The roads have always been good and so was the power supply,” adds Ahmedabad based social scientist, Tridip Suhrud.

What Modi managed was to amalgamate his personal charisma with both Hindutva and development, and presented a cocktail that was drunk by the majority of the voters in Gujarat. The man who gets the crowds worked up enough to shout ‘kill, kill’ during riots easily identified with the CM, as did the suave, pin-striped investor who attends conferences in five-star hotels and talks about investment and infrastructure. Modi’s packaging hooked the media, especially pink newspapers.

In addition, CM Narendra Modi turned out to be the man of the masses, the one who was in touch with the grassroots. “It’s pure theatre. He is a versatile performer,” says Tarak Mehta, distinguished Gujarati humour writer and playwright. His clean image also worked wonders for him. “The remarkable personal honesty and integrity displayed by Modi as an incorruptible politician has been one of the major factors for his high popularity ratings,” adds Suhrud.

King of Disruptive Times

Stupendously sarcastic to competition & a saintly saviour to the sector – that’s Kingfisher…B&E’s Steven Philip Warner analyses...

It received nothing more than derision and mocking laughter when on a fine afternoon during the summer of 2005, Vijay Mallya promisingly announced the launch of a domestic carrier, destined to be the best in style, service and quality. There were chuckles all around the boardrooms and one Captain (G. R. Gopinath, MD, Air Deccan) even ridiculed the Kingfisher business model’s so-called superiority. “We are not in the business of fashion,” is what he had remarked... Today, Mallya effectively decides what Gopinath’s next strategic move should be. And it is this very ‘fashion-fanatic’ entrepreneur, ladies and gentlemen, who has swept across the domestic aviation sector disrupting many past taken-for-granted strategies in one stroke, giving nightmares to many struggling leaders in the sector like Jet Airways & Indian. That very style is what has allowed Vijay Mallya and his premium flier Kingfisher to run through the army of loss-making giants. From being a global stalwart in the alcoholic beverages industry to being a potent force in the airlines sector, which has in all reality changed the rules of the flying game; a game too hard for many to play and a game too easy for others to lose! But the wonder of it is that rather than focusing on one key strategy, Vijay Mallya actually used a plethora of tactics to fortify his position in the industry. B&E analyses the key ones...

Tactic No. 1: In-flight customer experience!

And it’s not the brilliant red colour that we’re talking about! Vijay Mallya, despite having introduced Kingfisher as a low cost carrier (LCC) airline, has extremely shrewdly repositioned the airline on the basis of quality being delivered to the customer rather than on low pricing! To a point where today, Kingfisher gives a stupendous promise of being a top-quality service airline, and for both economy and business classes alike. When asked about this tactically differentiating factor, Vijay Mallya stressed on the strong impact and importance of innovation, which created that special space for Kingfisher in the Indian skies. He divulges, “In terms of passenger service and delivering on our promises, Kingfisher Airlines has always been at the forefront by constantly innovating. The innovations span three broad areas – product and service offering, marketing related innovations and finally, innovations in terms of delivery and distribution. Even in the future, the focus will be on continuously enhancing operational efficiencies, increasing conveniences for guests so as to delight them even more and raising service standards even further!”

Mallya clearly has practised what he preaches. Think about it, forget domestic airlines, frequent flyers now vouch that Kingfisher’s in-flight customer experience is much better than that offered by even the best of international airlines. From most modern aircrafts, sumptuous gourmet cuisines (with additional helpings at the call of a button), vibrant ambience to undoubtedly the best in-flight entertainment system in the industry with about 30 live, video and radio channels, Kingfisher has truly created world class benchmarks in service quality. And how could we forget the quintessentially charming airhostesses. Quotes an amiable Supreet Kaur, a flight-attendant with experience at Kingfisher Airlines, “It’s a great place to work, with such a healthy atmosphere. Sometimes it gets rough ensuring that the passengers get the best of what we call world-class service. Surely, my experience at other airlines have not been this pleasing...” We can surely vouch for that, can’t we!
